Digital Twin of a High-Tech Manufacturing System

For this project, I built a digital twin of a high-tech manufacturing system in Python. The model included machines, operators, buffers and autonomous robots that had to work together to process production orders. Different dispatching rules and system configurations were tested to see how they affected throughput, waiting times and overall performance. The project helped me gain experience with simulation, data analysis and process optimization.

Optimizing a Parcel Sorting System

Together with my team, I developed a digital twin of Vanderlande's PosiSorter system. The goal was to improve the sorting performance without changing the physical layout of the system. We designed and tested several sorting algorithms, including FIFO, load balancing and optimization-based approaches. Using simulation and real-world data, we compared the performance of each algorithm and identified ways to reduce recirculations and improve efficiency.

Improving Throughput Times with Simulation

In this project, I modeled a production process with two machines and multiple rework loops. The goal was to investigate whether giving priority to reworked orders would reduce the average throughput time. We built and validated two simulation models and compared their performance using statistical analysis. This project gave me hands-on experience with discrete-event simulation and queueing systems.

Inventory Optimization Tool

For this case study, I worked on an inventory optimization problem for a large product portfolio. We analyzed current replenishment policies and developed a tool that determines optimal reorder levels and order quantities while maintaining service levels. The model considered inventory costs, storage costs and operational costs, and could be applied to thousands of products.
